Alpha:

At the Church of the Springs, we have reintroduced this ancient
process (our Vision Statement mentions an “ANCIENT-FUTURE FAITH).
Before each person joins the church, whether they are a life-long follower
of Christ or someone who is just beginning to explore the Christian faith,
all potential members experience an eleven-week course called
“Alpha.” Alpha stands for...
A Anyone
interested in finding out more about the Christian faith
L Learning and
laughter
P Pasta or
pancakes (FOOD!)
H Helping one
another
A Ask
anything
During the Alpha Course our pastor also takes the time to share the
history of the Church of the Springs and the story of the “Little Joe’s”
Presbyterian Church. He also speaks about his call to the ministry and
some of the important principles related to starting a new church.
Additionally, Pastor Brian explains the Mission, Vision and Values of the
congregation along with the particular beliefs of the Presbyterian
Church. All in all, the Alpha Course provides a wonderful entryway
into the church. New friends are made for a life
time!
After the Alpha experience, potential members are then taken
through a process whereby they are able to discern their God-given
Spiritual Gifts and their Passion for Ministry. This course is
called “NETWORK,” and it is usually taught over a four-week period.
Pastor Brian uses this opportunity to teach about our particular
philosophy of ministry at the Church of the Springs. This philosophy
revolves around the Apostle Paul’s teachings that: 1) the Holy Spirit give
spiritual gifts to every believer and that God calls all believers to use
and develop their spiritual gifts so that they may be a blessing to the
other members of the Body [1 Corinthians 12-14, etc.] and 2) the primary
role of a pastor is to equip the members of the Body for ministry and not
to do all of the ministry him or herself [Ephesians
4:11-12].
So, just like in the early days of the Church, persons who are
discerning God’s call regarding membership at the Church of the Springs
are given the opportunity through Alpha and NETWORK to freely explore and
ask questions about the Christian faith and about our particular approach
to ministry and to connect with other people. This time of training,
discovery and spiritual formation provides a special season for our new
members to fully understand what type of church they are joining and also
to see how their lives and gifts can be fully integrated into the life of
the church.
